Practically everyone with some financial knowledge dreams of the so-called financial independence. Apparently, there is more than one definition of financial independence, or at least people understand it differently. My definition is simple: you have a source of financial income that doesn’t depend on your work and covers all your monthly expenses. For some, it’s easier to explain it as retirement, and for most people, this goal is only achieved later in life. However, it’s become increasingly clear to me that this kind of retirement can be reached at a much younger age. On the internet, this topic became known as the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement. And, of course, it fascinated me immensely.
I’m a developer. So, I work in a field that gives me several opportunities to reach this goal. The approach that interests and fascinates me the most right now is called micro SaaS: small businesses offering highly niche services. The idea isn’t to make tens of millions, but to generate small, recurring income every month. Maybe a micro SaaS can bring in $500 USD per month. Imagine having 5 of those? Or 10?
Well, for me, it’s going to start with a simple website. I saw in an interview on the High Signal newsletter a guy who did really well with a remote job board website. Out of curiosity, I looked to see if there was any good domain available for the Brazilian audience and, voilà: empregoremoto.com.br — literally "remote job" and with a top-level domain that isn’t random (.xyz or .click). I’ve done freelance work in the past as a frontend dev but always avoided backend development (ironically, I work with embedded systems). However, this time I won’t be coding alone—I’ll have the support of ChatGPT and Copilot.
Will this be yet another project that dies before it launches? I hope not this time. Maybe saying this publicly will add some weight to my procrastination. If you’re curious (or looking for remote jobs in Brazil), come look at the site.
